Drone Videography in Utah: When Aerial Footage Is Worth It
Utah might be the best place in the country for aerial footage. The Wasatch, red rock, ski runs, golf courses and big open valleys look incredible from above. But drone footage isn't automatically good footage, and it isn't right for every project.
When aerial footage is worth it
- Real estate with a setting. Views, acreage, ski access, golf frontage. The location is half of what's being sold.
- Construction progress. Overhead shots from the same spots each month show a build taking shape.
- Outdoor events. Races, festivals and tournaments look bigger and more exciting from above.
- Resorts, venues and tourism. Aerials show guests what it feels like to arrive.
- Brand films. A few aerial establishing shots make any film feel more cinematic.
When it isn't
If your story happens indoors, like a clinic, a barbershop or a small storefront downtown, ground footage matters more. A drone shot that doesn't add information is just filler.
What makes aerials look professional
- Slow, deliberate moves. Smooth pushes, reveals and orbits feel high-end. Fast, jerky flying doesn't.
- Purpose. Every shot should show something: the view, the scale, the location.
- Good light. Early morning and golden hour add depth and color. Midday light looks flat.
- Mixed with ground footage. Aerials set the scene, ground shots tell the story.
Know the rules before you fly
Commercial drone flights in the U.S. fall under the FAA's Part 107 rules. The airspace around Salt Lake City International Airport is controlled, and flying there requires authorization, usually requested through the FAA's LAANC system. Launching drones in national parks isn't allowed, and ski resorts, venues and private property require permission. Plan every flight ahead.
Utah weather
Wind is the most common reason flights get cancelled, especially in the mountains. Cold weather drains batteries fast, so winter shoots need extra batteries kept warm. Always build a backup date into the schedule.
Our setup
We fly the DJI Mavic 4 Pro and pair aerials with ground footage shot on the Canon EOS C50 and R5 C. See aerials from Park City real estate and Utah construction projects on our work page, or read about luxury real estate videography in Park City.
